Sign up for a position for NEXT week -- then sit THIS week with the one performing that function. Watch. Ask questions.

Sign up for something easy like Laughmaster, Quote or Word of the Day at the earliest opportunity. Do several of these ASAP to get comfortable as a meeting participant. Then have a go at Timer, and then Grammarian. These are easy positions requiring little experience and minimal to no preparation.

As soon as you feel comfortable with these entry-level positions, volunteer to be Topic Master or General Evaluator. These take a bit more experience, but are quite appropriate for anyone who has completed one or two manual speeches and actively participated in a half-dozen meetings.

When you have completed at least four manual speeches and participated in a dozen or so meetings, you will be ready for your first experience as a speech Evaluator or the Toastmaster.

As a new Evaluator, make a special effort to read your speaker's assignment in the manual ahead of time and to review the evaluation criteria in the manual. Deliberately use the TM "sandwich" format for evaluations. you can experiment with different approaches when you have more experience.

As a new TM of the day, come early and be sure you have a
"cheat sheet" with all of the speakers and functionaries names. Be sure you have an introduction sheet from every manual speaker.

In any position from Laughmaster to Toastmaster, always feel free to ask questions - even "in real time" -- It is quite acceptable to say "I'm not sure what to do here" and direct a question to your mentor, a specific toastmaster, or the group.
